Towards the understanding of lubrication mechanisms in total knee replacements – Part I: Experimental investigations

نویسندگان

چکیده

This contribution is aimed at the detailed understanding of lubrication mechanisms within total knee replacement. While Part I focused on experimental investigation, II deals with development a predictive numerical model. Here, simulator was used for direct optical observation contacts between metal femoral and transparent polymer components. Transient dynamic conditions were applied. Mimicked synovial fluids fluorescently labelled constituents as test lubricants. The results showed that ?-globulin forms thin boundary lubricating film, being reinforced by interaction phospholipids hyaluronic acid. Further film attributed to albumin layering. Based results, novel model implant proposed.

Predictions in Total Knee Replacements

Damage patterns on the articular surface of the proximal tibia, including cartilage degen23 eration in osteoarthritic knees and damage of polyethylene knee prostheses after total knee replacement, provide information related to knee joint biomechanics and damage 25 mechanisms at the articular surface. This study reports articular damage patterns and knee kinematics assessed in the knees of olde...

The management of infected total knee replacements.

A review of patients with an infected resurfacing prosthesis is presented. Eight patients with a loose infected prosthesis were treated by a one-stage exchange arthroplasty; six others with a well-fixed infected prosthesis were treated by drainage and antibiotics. All eight treated by exchange arthroplasty remained free of infection as did five of those treated by drainage. In four of these las...

Reducing variation in total knee replacements.

1 Reducing variation in total knee replacements A new study in the journal Health Affairs of total knee replacement (TKR) confirms that wide variations in care exist among hospitals based on factors such as geographic location. The High Value Healthcare Collaborative found significant variations in TKR among the 5 participating health care systems. Among these were length of stay (LOS), where p...

Measuring Constraint of Total Knee Replacements

INTRODUCTION: In vitro constraint and laxity measurements of total knee replacements (TKR) give an important insight into the stability characteristics that the device will exhibit when in clinical use. An understanding of these characteristics is essential so that the surgeon is able to choose the appropriate TKR design to suit each patient’s requirements [1]. ASTM has standard specifications ...

Simulating Wear On Total Knee Replacements

Wear on total knee replacements (TKRs) is an important criterion for their performance characteristics. Numerical simulations of such wear has seen increasing attention over the last years. They have the potential to be much faster and less expensive than the in vitro tests in use today. While it is unlikely that in silico tests will replace actual physical tests in the foreseeable future, a ju...
